Yeah, definitely I agree to get the levels out first.

Oh thanks, I missed that before.

Yeah, I was also hoping little details like that, and also queen animations would be added, but I think they will come with the final release or after unfortunately.

Maybe the scientist in the formicarium would throw down some sugar cubes every few minutes too. Or whatever sugary stuff ant keepers feed their ants...

Where did you see him digging!?

Suggestions & Feedback / African Driver Ants
« on: August 14, 2018, 03:22:46 PM »
You guys said you wanted an increase in complexity as the formicarium tiers progressed, and I can see that happening with fire ants and their bridges in formicarium tier 4. Liam on the steam discussions said it was likely African Driver ants would be the fifth formicarium tier.

In real life, a queen African Driver Ant (or almost any army ant species) has two stages, the egg laying stage and the migratory stage (this is why she looks so strange). She will consume food and will lay a bunch of eggs, and then she will stop laying and enter the migratory stage. Her workers will protect her and the brood as the whole colony migrates to a new location by creating a  mobile "fortress" around them with their own bodies.

Perhaps this could be implemented by making it so the nest is not necessarily underground but inside one of these "fortresses". The player could build chambers inside of it. I think these horde mechanics would definitely increase the complexity of the game, but also it would be an amazing finale to the campaign. Of course, this would also be the most difficult and time-consuming species to implement if you guys do something like this.

What are the victory conditions?

I also have a few questions...

Does each square on that grid represent a place a plant can be placed down?

Will minors have to "process" the leaves before giving them to the fungus?

Will the size of the ant determine how big a piece of leaf they can bring back?

Suggestions & Feedback / Camera mode controls
« on: August 13, 2018, 12:25:01 AM »
I use camera mode like a close up cinematic mode. I've rebound the camera controls to be identical to that of a total war game, if you've ever played any of them. It's an extremely easy way to control the camera, but the problem is because I am using WASD, I cannot use WASD to move around outside of the camera mode. I've solved this by using the arrow keys instead. Maybe there could be a way to implement the ability to use WASD to control camera mode as well as normal mode at the same time is a suggestion to make the game controls easier.

In free play mode funnel spiders will kill devil's coach horse larva, but I'm not sure about the adults because they might be too big for them to kill. In 2.1 all the enemies are allied, that is the one level as well as 1.1 where all the enemies are allied.

That's only true for 2.1 for balancing reasons. In 1.1, devils coach larvae and adults are not meant to attack each other (obviously), although, yes, they are allied to mole crickets. In 1.2 spiders will attack and kill wood worms, wood lice, devils coach larvae, and enemy ants. With challenge mode on, even mole crickets and enemy ants will battle each other. In 2.2 if you look at the enemy colonies at dawn, they will battle hermit crabs and wolf spiders that are retreating back to wherever they go at day time. The purpose of 2.2 is defending your colony from two fronts and staying alive. So for the purpose of the level both colonies are allied, but they will still attack enemy insects such as wolf spiders and hermit crabs (especially at dawn when they are coming to the surface after night). And in free play all enemies are attack each other.

Honestly the game does a pretty good job at keeping enemy behavior realistic except for 2.1, which I don't mind.

Unlike many developers do, Slug Disco doesn't just reskin our current units and call them something else. They're actually changing many core mechanics of how our ant colonies function in order to give us fun, realistic, and more complex gameplay for leaf-cutter ants. Then there are 3 maps (2 for levels, one for free play) they must design, a ton of enemies, the creation of 3.1 and 3.2, voice actors (and script creation), music to be composed, probably some improvements to what we already have, and much much more. Note they also have to balance all of the enemies, balance the new ant species, balance the levels, create animations and models for the enemies and ant species. Slug Disco mentioned we'd be getting something different for Formicarium Challenge 3 rather than enemies coming directly for your nest from tubes, so that would take a lot of time to create. They need to make leaf-cutter ant specific landmarks so free play is balanced for them too. Then they are working on AI colonies, and I can't imagine how much time and work it takes to create intelligent randomized colonies. Also, they mentioned making challenge modes for 2.1 and 2.2, so they'd have to create a scenario and balance that as well. That's a pretty big list I could come up with, and I don't know much about making games, so I'm sure I'm missing a lot.

It hasn't even been a few months since free play mode (and battle arena) was officially released anyway, so it really hasn't been that long to be complaining about it. Personally I'm glad we're getting large, quality updates over a long period of time rather than buggy smaller updates every two months  :D

Of course, they'll come along in the next set of levels and new maps (you probably won't see hermit crabs and beach tiger beetles in a rainforest)! Mike or John has mentioned phorid flies, which lay its eggs in a leaf-cutter ant's body.

Suggestions & Feedback / Re: Formica ereptors and DNA Stealing

So if there was a Formica ereptor in the form of a Formica fusca, could an enemy ereptor take fusca genes from it?
