Coming in the next patch for Empires of the Undergrowth - Challenge Mode for levels 2.1 Rising Tide and 2.2 Queen of the Hill! When in Challenge Mode, these levels will feature terrifying beach tiger beetle larvae - the juvenile forms of the adult beetles that roam the beach. Although young, these beetle larvae are extremely deadly.

They live in burrows and wait for suitable prey - such as ants - to stumble too close. They then strike with frightening speed before retreating back into their burrow to consume their quarry.

Off Topic / Re: price is to high?

We did some very careful consideration with our price and we think we got it right considering that we've been doing well on Steam.

If you consider the price to be too high, then that's fine - sales are likely to come after the game goes into full release.

General Discussion / Re: Screen Shot Saturday: Small Improvements System
« on: September 19, 2018, 12:51:17 AM »
The ants will not be able to be upgraded infinitely (without infinite grinding) - each time you upgrade things will become *significantly* more expensive to do. There's a very practical limit on how many times it can be done.

Like the existing purchasing system in the Formicarium, it's a consequence of the modular way we've designed the game (which has allowed us to do early access the way we want) - we never intended a grind for the game but we realise that by this point, waiting for new content, some players will have been grinding for a load of resources.

Important to stress - you don't have to grind with this new system to progress when the next set of levels come out, but there is the option to do that if you want for some small stat increases.

The next update will include a system for making small improvements to your Formicarium colony by spending royal jelly - a handy way for those of you who are sitting on a cache of jelly to spend it before the leafcutter update. For Screenshot Saturday this week, we're showing the menus for those!

We've just published our newsletter for August 2018. If you'd like to see what we've been up to and what's next for Empires of the Undergrowth, it's full of information on topics such as:

- The interim update between now and the leafcutter one
- The addition of challenge mode to 2.1 and 2.2
- A whole new Freeplay map called Towhead
- How our recording sessions with our narrators went
- How we're getting on with the art, animation and AI for our leafcutter ants!

Read away, and as always, thanks ant fans. Thantfans.

Suggestions & Feedback / Re: Eatable waves Freeplay Mode
« on: September 06, 2018, 11:52:53 AM »
Eatable waves would, after a tipping point, make the game very easy - you'd be getting free food delivered straight to you. I understand that some players might like this but it would certainly take the challenge out of it!

We've discussed having ant corpses collectible too but there's a few reasons we don't want to do this. Firstly, very few ant species are cannibalistic, and also since ants die very frequently it'd tie the remaining ants up with too many gather jobs.

News and Announcements / Re: Backers and Beta Backers

Backers are from the Kickstarter back in 2016. I think I'd like to do a badge for everyone who's helped us out during early access when the time comes for full release :)

So they will become a kind of funnel web but more powerful ?

I guess there's some similarities but they're far, far quicker. Have a look at this video of someone "fishing" for tiger beetle larvae to see how fast they can move!

They'll be killable but there's a bit of tactics involved, and there will be some necessary sacrifices.

We haven't tweaked the numbers properly on how strong they will be but once we come to testing we'll have a better idea of what's a good challenge without making them too annoying.

In small burrows carved into the sand, the larvae of the beach tiger beetles lie in wait. When a suitable prey item wanders too close to their lair - such as an ant - they rush out with frightening speed and grab the hapless victim.

These may be the younger form of the adult beetles, but even in their juvenile form they are just as deadly. In Empires of the Undergrowth, tiger beetle larvae will appear in the beach levels (2.1 Rising Tide and 2.2 Queen of the Hill) in its special challenge mode. Coming soon!

Bugs / Troubleshooting / Re: Major glitch: Enemies Getting Stuck
« on: August 29, 2018, 10:10:09 PM »
The creature sticking glitch (and variants of it) has been noted; we think it's an old one that was accidentally reintroduced with the Freeplay update - the next patch will address it. That's a universal issue and not related to playing on Mac.

Shall pass on the info about the lack of animation (we really appreciate the reports from Mac users since you're a much smaller part of our user base).

You've been very helpful with this - and we appreciate your continued support. You are the 2nd forum user to receive the "Extremely Helpful Person" badge in honour of your efforts.

A little work-in-progress for something we'll be adding to the beach levels (2.1 and 2.2) in Empires of the Undergrowth. Who wouldn't want to replay these levels with the added threat of having your ants snatched away by the larval form of the beach tiger beetles?

Challenge Mode for 2.1 and 2.2 - coming soon!
