I'm not coder but would there be a way to make a loop that makes it begin again when it's ended ?

Sure, it's quite possible. Just needs a few hours of rearranging things to get it working - and right now the guys are elbows-deep in leaf cutter work, so it's not really worth their while dropping that when they're in the swing of things.

Good chance this could happen, but the guys want to focus on the plan for now.

Freeplay with Atta is going to be so weird, if at all possible. The dead insects can't give you food, so are the landmarks all going to be redone into leaves?

The current line of thinking is that if you play as leaf cutters in Freeplay, the food-dropping landmarks will instead be leaves of various configurations. There will still be infestation landmarks, since enemies will still attack the leaf cutters even if the leaf cutters don't eat them.

I'm hoping the devs do it so that the rainforest map (I'm assuming it will come out for free play with 3.1 and 3.2) is rich with leaves for leafcutters but other non-fungus farming species would still be able to survive there because of enemy insects. However, on the beach map, there would be no leaves, or maybe some landmarks with leaves making them very rare. This would make it realistic so it would be very hard to survive as leaf cutters on a beach.

Freeplay is still going to be entirely customisable so if you want to go ahead and play as leaf cutters on the beach with readily available food sources, you can. However, you may notice a currently ghosted-out option in Freeplay - "Setup". The idea here is that there will be a multitude of presets, for example one might be called "Rain Forest Leaf Cutters" which will have a realistic setup for leaf cutters in a rain forest map.

The beach underground and rotting log underground are pretty similar (I think there may be some slight lighting changes). It's probably not going to be added with leaf cutters but maybe after that, are there any plans for making a surface map for the Rotting Log? There are a ton of cool possibilities for a rotting log map. If one is ever added to the free play, maybe mole crickets from the surface could, after a period of time, burrow into the player's nest.

No plans currently - our next levels will be in a rain forest environment. However, if things are still going well after full release we're likely to continue adding new stuff, and I don't see why a temperate forest setting couldn't be part of that one day.

This isn't a bug as such but simply the map has ended and all the scripted events are finished. I guess we could go back and have the day/night and tide cycle continue, but it's not a priority.

Can we start a Formicarium with a pure Atta colony instead then? This should be easily doable, right? (And yes, I know the dialogue probably woudn't fit because they're talking of ereptors but honestly I don't think most people would care about that)

Not at all straightforward. As always, never say never, but it's a lot more involved than just having the wrong voice lines play.

The current plan is no - the formicarium colony won't grow fungus - but they will get the Atta cephalotes Majors to add to their colony as tanky, powerful fighters.

The Intel HD graphics won't help, but I think Matt has spoken about this before. We use Unreal Engine 4 for EotU, which lets us produce some pretty amazing graphical effects relatively quickly and efficiently. Some small shadowing issues are a consequence of using what is intended to be an FPS engine for a RTS top-down game.

So minims are just aesthetic...? Yes, they have an important role in growing the fungus but they are completely uncontrollable and their job in the game is to make the growing of fungus more realistic looking? If that's true, I'm still happy we have them to look at, it'll make the colony seem more alive.

They certainly will make the place feel more alive, but they still have tasks to do - it's them that will be the final stage in the production line to get the harvested leaves turned into fungus. Their numbers are tied to the number of nursery chambers and their inhabitants.

After the tiny minims and the small minors, the next biggest step up in Leaf Cutter society are the medium-sized "media" ants. These bad girls are much bigger than the minors, and they pack a serious bite with the slicing jaws. Formidable fighters in their own right, they're perfectly adapted for a life of cutting and collecting foliage for their colony's fungus gardens.

These still aren't the biggest - come back next week to see the absolute units that are!

It's interesting to see the same slang term used for different creatures. In the UK, the term "daddy longlegs" is usually used to refer to the crane fly, not the harvestman arachnids shown in the link.

Harvestmen are fascinating creatures; there's no reason they couldn't show up in EotU at some point.

Well, it is a year or so old.

Intel Core i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz
16 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB
Windows 10 with 1920 x 1080 display.

I run World Of Tanks full graphics with no problem, even before the new graphic engine they released this year.

That's a pretty beefy system - thanks for the info. There's a chance of a memory leek going on somewhere, so as John says we'll look into it.

I assume the minims will be part of the fungus garden tiles and not actually be controllable by the player (which would make sense as those ants don't really do anything other than tending the fungus - even the brood is usually cared for by the minors).

We'd like to do multiplayer but we have to finish our single player experience first. If we did do multiplayer, it would probably (at least initially) be a skirmish vs mode - not allied or co-op. But as always, never say never - if things go well with the full release, we're likely to continue supporting the game and adding new stuff to it for quite a while!
