Suggestions & Feedback / Re: Some ideas and complaints
« on: March 24, 2018, 10:51:22 PM »
- To the same place the music comes from.
- We've struggled with the idea of rebuilding all the way back since we started working on the game, somewhere around 2014. We haven't found a way that works for us, almost entirely for gameplay reasons. Allowing the player to turtle in breaks the level design in several ways.
- She's there for a good reason - to make the level the right amount of challenging. Repositioning the queen would create a similar problem to point 2 in that the levels are designed around defending a particular spot, a la Dungeon Keeper. In short - allowing queen movement would make the game too easy.

Suggestions & Feedback / Re: Better difficulty ranking
« on: March 22, 2018, 10:41:43 PM »
It's not a case of tweaking a difficulty multiplier here. Percentage difficulty is not very easy to quantify in the way we want to do things. The difficulty levels are easier to understand when you factor in this one design philosophy we have:

When you encounter a creature, we want you to know what you're facing. With the exception of "easy" difficulty (which has reduced damage), all the other difficulties feature increased numbers of enemies instead. So in "insane" mode you might be facing down 5 Devil's Coach Horse adults instead of 2, rather than of 2 Devil's Coach Horse that are 3 times as strong as they are on "medium".

No plans for console ports yet. It really depends on the success of the final release.

General Discussion / Re: Mac users

It's really going to depend on your Mac. Like PCs, there are many different kinds of Mac and if yours is a lower-specced one, it's not going to run the game as well.

The game is being optimized all the time and performance will improve as updates continue, but the game runs on Unreal Engine 4 which is a modern, powerful engine that needs a fair whack of hardware behind it to run well.

hey it worked for BF3
The AAA games can get away with it more than indie devs due to brand loyalty. Not that we'd ever give you guys a glitchy mess anyway, even if we thought we could get away with it!

General Discussion / Re: Subtitles planned ? OST too for GOG ?

Subtitles are planned! We need to finish more of the game first.

Bugs / Troubleshooting / Re: New Computer
« on: March 12, 2018, 11:03:14 PM »
All on the assumption that you're a Windows and Steam user:

Yes - the save files are located in this folder; replace [YOUR USER NAME] with, funnily enough, your user name.

C:\Users\[YOUR USER NAME]\AppData\Local\EotU\Saved\SaveGames

Install EotU, then copy everything in that folder to your chosen transportation method (USB drive, email, floppy disk, whatever takes your fancy). Then paste it in the likewise folder on your new computer.

The next update (some weeks off) will include Cloud saves for your Formicarium - so you'll have an account-dependent set of saved games rather than a system-dependent one.

How do we go about submitting our screenshots, i'd love to give a few ;)

I believe the default button on Steam is F12 - if you press that during a game it'll save a screenshot. When you exit the game, a Steam popup will give you the option to upload it to your gallery.

Also shouldn't this be in the news section?

By strict definition yes but hardly anyone goes in there.

General Discussion / Re: Question: Major Update 3
« on: March 12, 2018, 04:35:44 PM »
Unless otherwise stated the major updates will include a Formicarium tier consisting of 2 levels and a Formicarium challenge, a new species and several new enemies. New environments, mechanics etc will be included as part of the major updates.

There isn't a specification that a major update has to include only one species of ant, but we expect 1 and 2 to introduce 1 each. All subject to change

Our February 2018 Empires of the Undergrowth newsletter is up! We go into a little more detail about the upcoming leaf cutter ants and include some juicy screenshots from freeplay mode - and we've included a "road map" for the rest of 2018!

Suggestions & Feedback / Re: Possible Future Idea for food gathering
« on: March 11, 2018, 04:25:23 PM »
It's an interesting idea but it does present a lot of technical challenges that probably would not be worth the time investment they'd take. Leaf cutters will have a different method of food harvesting entirely (because they don't eat meat).

General Discussion / Re: 3.1/3.2/Freeplay Mode
« on: March 11, 2018, 04:24:09 PM »
Estimate for Freeplay mode is "a few weeks", estimate for 3rd tier is the summer. I'm afraid I can't be more precise than that - we have 3 developers and 2 of them aren't full time until April, and whenever I make an estimate and it's missed people are going to get upset.

In Dec they said late January, late Jan came along and then they said Feb. Feb came along and then they said March, and here we are on March 11th and can figure out the pattern.

It seems they are completely adamant on not releasing this thing at ALL until it is completely perfect.

We are far from alone in this. Software development is so complex and unpredictable that I take a risk every time I try to estimate it.
